In Shirati, in northern Tanzania, a center is currently being built to raise the standard of care for mothers and newborns. The project, set up by a team of international and local doctors, focuses on the most vulnerable patients: mothers during childbirth and babies who need intensive care. In this blog, I will take you through the plans, the challenges, and the significance of this initiative for the region.
Why this Center is Urgently Needed

The construction of a multifunctional building
Behind the doctors and staff, a new building is going up, which is scheduled to be completed in September. It will be a multifunctional centre that brings together several components:
- A neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), specifically for newborn babies who require intensive care.
- An operating room for gynecological and obstetric procedures, essential for complications during childbirth.
- By combining these functions, the center can better support mothers and babies and treat them in a single trajectory.
Meer dan alleen stenen
A building alone does not ensure quality care. That’s why the doctors also focus strongly on knowledge and resources. While the builders were at work, the medical team worked on acquiring equipment and setting up training programs.
Cooperation and support
A project of this scale can only exist through collaboration. Various organizations, foundations, and involved individuals have expressed their support. International doctors work together with local teams to combine the right expertise and resources.
The Global Health Doctors, among others, are involved – a group of doctors who work worldwide in hospitals with limited resources. Thanks to their commitment and partnerships with foundations and funds, this project at Shirati KMT Hospital has been made possible.
What this Means for the Region
For the Shirati region and surrounding villages, the new mother and child center represents significant progress. It ensures that:
- more babies have access to intensive care;
- mothers receive faster and better guidance during and after childbirth;
- complications can be treated earlier;
- knowledge in the region increases as doctors and nurses receive training.
The ultimate goal is simple but powerful: saving lives and improving the quality of care.

Hope for the Future
In the video, the involved doctors expressed their enthusiasm about the progress. Construction is proceeding according to plan, and the team looks forward to receiving their first patients once the center opens.
Beyond practical care, they hope this center will also become a place where knowledge exchange and education are central. This way, the project’s impact can extend far beyond Shirati: it can grow into an example for other hospitals in Tanzania and even in the broader region.
Gratitude and Appreciation
A common thread through all the stories of those involved is gratitude. Gratitude towards the builders, the local teams, the international doctors, and the organizations supporting the project. Without them, this center would not have been possible.
It shows what cross-border collaboration can achieve: from an idea on paper to a building that will soon save lives daily.
